Ancarrow said the Army Corps of Engineers is now proposing some 20 dams upstream on the James which will inundate the land they tried to protect from flooding. “We’ve got to remember they have to build dams to stay in business,” Ancarrow said. “And we have to remember that Camille was not an ordinary occurance. Thirty-five inches of rain fell in five hours. That's a world record.”
ANCARROW was asked if the farmers along the stream sections that were channelized felt the project helped them. "At first. But at some places where rock berms and walls were built, the first flood to come knocked out the walls and spread them across the fields. They’re not happy now.”
