The exploding population seems, to be related more to a rapidly decreasing death rate, than to an increase in the birth rate. The effectiveness of modern medicine has been eagerly accepted by people all over the world. Asa result, the life span in many countries has nearly doubled during recent decades. On the other hand, efforts to reduce the birth rate have met with very little success except in a few isolated situations.

In terms of the agricultural part of this problem, most people are inclined to think something will turn up to avert the famines. The authors of this book believe this is not the case. They have talked with experts in many fields and no easy solutions were suggested.

SYNTHETIC FOODS might help, but they are produced primarily from other agricultural products, or do not please the taste. Most of us accept new types of food quite reluctantly.

Food from the oceans would seem to have promise, but here again, the experts say a big increase from this source is not likely.
