WELL, WHAT about “voter apathy,” and not going to the polls? Do we blame the things that have happened in national government over the past few years on the people who didn’t vote, or on the people who voted certain people into office? It’s an interesting question, and not easily dismissed by platitudes about “voter apathy.”
Sometimes voters are “apathetic” for good reason, and not the least of these reasons is continued frustration in their efforts to obtain responsive government, even at the most local levels. We can name any number of county and municipal organizations in this area which, to the best of our knowledge, are not representative of their constituents, and who make it a practice to ignore the most active systems, almost as a matter of policy. Some of our small town governments provide the most notorious examples.
So, please, politicians (and editorial writers), let’s not berate even those citizens who might, technically, qualify for the “apathetic” label. Maybe they’re that way for a good reason. It’s up to us to give them reasons for being otherwise. □
