Leading at the start was Arch Kingsley on Madagascar followed by Ranfolph Rouse, a five-times winner on Buen Paisano, who won in 1970 and 1971. Ernest Oare’s Charlie Bob went to the front at the third only to be challenged by David Semmes’ August Acorn, winner in ’68 and ’69, who took the lead at the top of the hill. Then they came barreling down the mountainside where Buen Paisano flew past th-e leaders. August Acorn and Charlie Bob caught up and the three were abreast going past the stands.
Up the hill again with Charlie Bob two lengths in front going over the third last at the top, down the steep slope, over the one at the bottom, around the tight turn to the final fence, it was still Charlie Bob on top. Buen Paisano made his move approaching the last, and into the stretch the leaders came in a furious drive with Buen Paisano across the finish a half length over August Acorn; then came Stanislaw Maliszewski’s Hammurabi and Charlie Bob.
However, the taste of victory was short for Randy Rouse; he had cut the flag before the last fence and was disqualified. Winner was the popular sportsman from Potomac David Semmes and August Acorn; second Hammurabi and third Ernest Oare’s Charlie Bob.
