In the flat race which followed, 12 got off to a ragged start with John Martin’s War Story and Tommy Lee Jones’ Lay Off in the lead. Steve Green rode his Service’s Image to victory, with Larmonde Stables’ Baroness Bedres, Anthony Price up, coming in a close second, followed by Roy Graham on Tommy Lee Jones’ Lay Off.
The ladies were the first to try the new timber course, which no longer goes up the corridor through the crowd but has its third and fourth fences near the finish line in front of the paddock. Except for a quick start by Connie Blevins on her Eloping and a challenge by Susan Green’s Charlie-BeGood, the two-mile, eleven-fences course was dominated by Robert Crompton’s Rosemary. The chestnut mare hit the last fence, however, sending her rider Sally Caldwell out of the saddle. For five strides the petite miss from Andrews Bridge Hunt rode Rosemary’s neck, then scrambled back into the saddle. As they headed for home Susan Green flashed passed to win on her first-time starter, Charlie-Be-Good. Third was Mrs. Wally Dennis on War Lis.
