It is very clear that the wilderness proposal for portions of Shenandoah National Park is suffering from a great deal of misinformation and misunderstanding as to what the Wilderness Act of 1964 does or does not do with respect to public use of such areas. Also gravely misunderstood is the impact of wilderness on private land and local interests. All of this is compounded by an unfortunate tendency to blame all park management problems on wilderness. Somehow wilderness has become the whipping boy for every local problem involving that park. I am keenly disappointed at the action of the Supervisors in authorizing Pete Luke to oppose wilderness at the next meeting of the District Planning Commission. However, I think the people of the County have reason to be grateful for Newbill Miller’s keen appreciation of the fact that the proposal was very much misunderstood. His words of caution were not heeded.
