t.... REAL ESTATE is the major business in Rappahannock County. The value of real estate traded in 1973 far outweighed the income from agricultural, retail and other sales in the county, according to a study made by the Department of Agriculture to find out wnat is happening to the pattern of land ownership in rural counties impacted , by a metropolitan area.
Most of these land sales are to “non-resident owners” in parcels of less than 50 acres. If the existing land market in Rappahannock continues to transfer small holdings to non-residents at high prices, agriculture will not be able to compete for the land.
