CIVIL AIR Patrol squadrons from along the Blue Ridge will meet at Front Royal Airport this weekend, March 22 and 23, to practice search and rescue skills. More than one hundred senior and cadet members will travel from as far as Lexington, Winchester and Herndon to take part in what might be called “disaster practice.”
As a volunteer auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force, Civil Air Patrol is charged with searching for light aircraft lost over land. Each squadron makes its own plan to insure that emergency help is available twenty-four hours per day. Periodically, many Civil Air Patrol squadrons meet together for a practice mission. Some members make up a story about a simulated flight that did not arrive at its planned destination. They “plant” a parachute or other indicator that has to be found. The other members use all of their skills to find the missing aircraft and bring pretend survivors to safety.
