“IT WILL be quite a problem to keep the^ tax rate down,’’ he said, going on to discuss questions raised by the reassessment conducted during the past year.

“The assessors made an estimate of fair market value and then took 60 per cent of that to arrive at an appraised value,” Luke explained. “The current county tax rate of $4.10 per $100 of assessed value was based on 20 per cent of the appraised value figure. This year, it has been decided to base the tax rate on 15 per cent of appraised value. It has been mentioned that appraised values could average 60 per cent higher than last year, so, hopefully, this will allow a considerable decrease in the tax rate, although that won’t necessarily mean lower tax bills.”

Luke mentioned some of these problems at the March meeting of the Board of Supervisors. By the April meeting, he hopes to have a schedule of meetings and a budget-setting and tax-setting timetable drawn up.D
