THE PRINCE William League for the Protection of Natural Resources feels that Marriott’s “Great America” would severely threaten the water supply in the Occoquan watershed. But Marriott continues to chip away at the State Water Control Board’s stringent policy. Their latest proposal has been a spray sewer.
The state Highway Department has also granted Marriott the right to build an interchange onto heavily congested Interstate 66. Marriott’s interchange would be located between two existing interchanges less than four miles apart. However, when the highway department granted the interchange, they said Marriott would have to pay for it, since the department has no funds. Nine miles of access road and the interchange are expected to cost $11 million, Ms. Porter said, and there’s no money for that, either.
“So it was a victory, of sorts, for Great America opponents. But, this serves to remind you that the number of interchanges originally proposed for an interstate will not be the only ones.”
As for the status of the Marriott park, “they’re not building yet,” Ms. Porter said. After the Prince William League for the Protection of Natural Resources went to court challenging that the rezoning given Mariott by the Supervisors was illegal, the Supervisors invited Marriott to refile. But Marriott has not done so yet.
