A SUBSTANTIAL portion of the parcels is acquired because the owners plan to rent, farm or otherwise acquire cash return from the land. Twenty-five percent of the parcels, representing 61 percent of the land, yield some income to the owner. Thirty-three percent yield income from a farm operation by the owner, 16 percent from farm rental and 34 percent from building rental.

As one might expect, the source of income is related to the size of the tract. Two-thirds of the tracts yielding income from farming are 50 acres or larger. Only 5 percent of the tracts yielding income from farming are 15 acres or smaller. Thirty-two percent of the resident-held parcels yield income and only 18 percent of the non-resident-held parcels yield income. Thus a great majority of the parcels are held for reasons other than producing current income. There are, in other words, many parcels that could be devoted to agriculture and not interfere with the primary reason for which the land is held.

Structures are important features of land use. Fifty-five percent of tracts held by non-residents have no buildings of any kind? Almost all parcels owned by residents will have a dwelling, the dominant type of structure located on all parcels.
