Both of the candidates are of similar political philosophy, and I am sure on important questions would vote properly and pretty much alike. They would probably vote like our two very capable Washington representatives, Senator Harry Byrd, Jr. and Representative Kenneth Robinson, would vote were they still in the General Assembly.
But the improtant point is that one man, Aldhizer, through his 25 years in the General Assembly, has attained Chairman of the State Commerce and Labor Committee, second ranking member of the Senate Finance Committee, and Chairman of the Majority Caucus, and this year particularly it is critically important to the Commonwealth that the experience and leadership of George Aldhizer be present. An unranked freshman Senator, regardless of his desire or personal qualifications, would not be given any leadership responsibilities and could play only a minor role in shaping the major decisions of the Senate in the next four years. If George Aldhizer is not returned to the Senate, the chairmanship of the Senate Commerce and Labor Committee undoubtedly will pass to a Senator from another part of the state, who has in the past voted for public employee collective bargaining.
