As to the causes of crime, the survey indicated that Virginians feel drug use and addiction is the single most important factor leading to crime.

The survey found about half, 48%, of the residents have had some kind of contact with police during the last year and a third report they personally have been victims of crime in the past few years. Most involved vandalism or burglary.

Seven out of ten Virginians are somewhat familiar with their local police and six out of ten with the state police. Most expressed little familiarity with courts and corrections agencies.
