TITLE Nine of the 1972 Education Amendments Act passed through HEW was adopted under protest by the Rappahannock County School Board at the June meeting of this group. The Act provides there will be no discrimination in education, employment, etc., and that all classes of schools be open to either sex. As an example, boys may take Home Ec and girls may take shop, if they wish.
It also provides that all athletics be comparable. However, it says that gym classes must, not may, be co-educational with the exception of contact sports. The boys and girls must, not may, play volley ball,games, etc., which are not considered contact sports, together.
The motion for adopting Title Nine was made by Allen Stokes, who said he did so under duress. A second, under duress, came from Mrs. Arthlinda Quaintance and the unanimous decision was noted with duress.
