THE Rappahannock County Bicentennial Pageant performed at Montpelier last week was beautiful and memorable, exemplifying the co-operative spirit of 1776 in a way that the most elaborate and expensive government-funded and directed projects are unable to do.
What made the production, starting with the signing of the Declaration of Independence and highlighting 200 years of history, so impressive were the gorgeous and authentic costumes, culled from local attics, and the attention to detail: Candles in the windows, bewigged courtiers silhouetted in the shadows; flaming flambeaux and flutes; stately reels and World War II jitterbug.
