One of Europe’s deadliest killers evidently has taken up permanent residence in the United States.
The killer is Amanita phalloides, a large white mushroom that one authority describes as “so clean and handsome in appearance as to practically invite gathering.”
The mushroom reportedly tastes as good as it looks. But within 8 to 16 hours after eating the “death cup,” victims suffer severe stomach cramps and nausea, followed by liver and kidney failure.
A phalloides is the most toxic of the various species of poisonous mushrooms. One bite can be fatal. Nearly half of the people who mistakenly eat the mushroom die within a few days.
