Chartered in 1961 mainly through the efforts of Aubrey Curtis, it was established to carry out the Ruritan National objectives of assistance to the rural community, building goodwill, and aiding likeminded organizations in creating an ideal place in which to live.
Beginning in 1962, a very mundane, but much needed service was evident in Amissville: there was neither disposal area nor pick up service for refuse. A landfill area was secured on Route 642, and for seven years, until a contract for this service was secured by the county supervisors, the Ruritan Club maintained an access road and provided periodic bulldozing of the disposal area.
Even at the beginning, the importance of the youth of the county was a matter of first priority for the Ruritans. Forest Grove Elementary School was then in operation. The first modest recognition of scholarship was an award of SIS, a regard for education which was to grow on an annual basis, culminating in 1976 with a gift of $100 to further the education of a Rappahannock High School graduate.
