Con tinning to Spread

In recent years, collectors have found the species in New York, Delaware, and Virginia. Late last year, Seattle residents were warned that the deadly mushroom is growing in that area.

“It’s practically suicide” to eat even a small amount of Amanita phalloides, cautioned an official of the National Park Service. He advised that mushroom picking be left to the professionals and commercial growers.

But mycophiles are convinced that store-bought mushrooms just don’t compare with the delicious flavor of the wild varieties. They agree, however, that extreme care must be taken, and warn beginners never to pick mushrooms except with an expert.

Authorities say it simply isn’t true that poisonous mushrooms can be identified by their texture, or by caps that peel easily, or because they have a telltale odor, or will turn a silver spoon dark when they are cooked, or by any other simple test.
