This past "year, the Rappahannock High School and Elementary students were encouraged to develop special talents. An Amateur Night provided a large group of young actors with opportunity to earn $75 in a much enjoyed show. For many years during the Easter Season, an annual egg hunt has been held. Halloween costume parties with prizes have been yearly functions, popular with both young people and adults.
During 1966, a Boy Scout troop was formed, with the Rev. Charles Kindred as Scout Master. When it was chartered into the national organization, the Ruritans presented the troop with a large United States flag and continued in following years to underwrite their annual dues. It was only natural that a Cub Scout troop was soon developed for younger boys.
During the late 1960’s and early 1970’s, there was much national unrest by the young people of some areas regarding our nation’s involvement in Vietnam. Ruritan National has always been deeply involved in the promotion of patriotism and citizenship. To encourage a positive stand of loyalty in Rappahannock County, the promotion and sale of United States flags was initiated. As a result, 275 families purchased our national colors.
An interesting outgrowth of this venture was a workreward proposal to all county Boy Scout Troops. Every scout who sold a flag was to participate in this award. A bus was hired and alb qualifying jwrtnbers* W“the> Flint Hill, Sperryville, and Amissville troops with several Ruritans accompanying them were packed in for a full day’s excursion to the battlefield and museum at New Market, Virginia.
