Cox responded that county Boards of Supervisors could get the dispute settled by exerting pressure on the Compensation Board to reverse the ruling on patrolling by sheriff's departments.

“Do sheriffs departments have any representative at the state level to carry their case before the General Assembly?” Luke asked.

Cox replied that they didn’t, adding that sheriffs were under the jurisdiction of, and answered to, local Boards of Supervisors.

“If you had a grievance against the Commonwealth Attorney, who would you carry it to?” Commissioner Bob Anderson asked Cox.

“The Commonwealth Attorney is a constitutional officer, responsible to the people,” Cox responded. Whether he gained satisfaction on the grievance from the Commonwealth Attorney or not, “I’d carry it to him," stated the Fauquier Sheriff.
