A new fund to aid victims of violent crimes in Virginia will be available Friday.
Depending on the extent of the injuries and the finances of the victim, a person may be awarded up to $10,000. In case of death, the immediate family of the deceased can file for assistance.
“Only persons injured on or after this July 1 are eligible for monetary compensation from the state,” said Robert Joyner, chairman of the Industrial Commission of Virginia, which will be processing the victim compensation claims when the new law takes effect Friday.
Virginia’s Crime Victims Compensation Fund will be operated the same way the state handles workman’s compensation cases. The commission will handle both programs.
Joyner’s office has been mailing out explanatory brochures and the claim forms to police departments, sheriffs offices, and commonwealth’s attorneys offices throughout the state.
