The need for housing in Rappahannock County, particularly for families with low and moderate incomes, has been brought out at county government meetings time and again over the past several months. A Regional Housing Plan released at last week’s meeting of the Rappahannock-Rapid an Planning District Commission further emphasizes this need.
According to the report, Rappahannock leads all other jurisdictions in the Planning District in percentage of substandard housing. As determined by the 1970 U. S. Censu, 38.7 per cent of the county’s units fail to meet minimum standards based on lack of plumbing facilities and overcrowding.
Housing of any type is hard to come by in the county. According to a profile of vacant housing units included in the report, the vacancy rate on houses for sale was .28 per cent and for rent vacancy rate was 3.70 per cent in Rappahnnock in 1970. “While obviously, the data are somewhat outdated, it can be assumed that the situation is at present much the same,” states the report.
