Even though forms are available in Fauquier from offices of state legislators and law enforcement officials, victims may deal directly with the Richmond office in filing a claim.

Persons eligible for compensation fall into three categories: victims of a violent crime, persons injured in the act of apprehending suspects or attempting to prevent a crime, and the immediate family of a victim who died as a direct result of a crime.

To qualify, a claimant must have cooperated with police and must have reported the crime within 48 hours after it occurred. Claims must be filed with the Richmond office within 180 days. The victim also must have no other means of compensation.

“This fund is designed for people who have nothing to fall back on, hardship cases,” Joyner said.

After the fund receives the basic information on the initial form, the Richmond staff will telephone the claimant for more detailed information and conduct ah investigation of the case by phone.
