The letter was written after BZA members noticed DeMent’s building going up—separate from the existing structure and only 10 feet from the adjoining property line.
“Puzzled And Confused”
To date, said McNear, DeMent’s only reply to BZA correspondence has been a letter in which DeMent stated that he was “puzzled and confused” over allegations of noncompliance. DeMent wrote that it was not his intention “to do other than follow the rules and decision of the Rappahannock Board of Zoning Appeals.” He claimed that his building permit included an approved breezeway between the existing building and the new structure and he didn’t address alledged setback violations at all.
