Rappahannock Registrar Mary Geverley sides with the majority of members of the Virginia Voter Registrars Association in opposing Election Day Registration and Voting Legislation, H. R. 5400, now before Congress. If passed, the bill would allow voters to register on the day of an election. Currently, registration books are closed 30 days prior to an election as far as voter eligibility is concerned.
“The cost of an election will go up” if the change in registration regulations is adopted, reported Mrs. Geverley. “We’d need extra help for voting.” She emphasized that there would be no accurate way to determine how many people would show up at the polls. “People getimpatient now if they have to' wait. We could need possibly twice as many workers” if the new law is passed, Mrs. Geverley said. Then, if voters don’t turn out in expected numbers, the precincts would wind up being over-manned, she added.
