Forestry experts fear a wood shortage if the available land to grow trees continues to shrink.
Southern Forest Institute President J. Greeley McGowin II says the South will have to produce 50 per cent of the nation’s wood needs in the next twenty-five years, compared to the present 30 per cent. He said, “the nation faces a steadily decreasing land base—the result of expanding cities, roads, and recreation areas.”
McGowin says the South’s forests can meet the challenge with good management. He added that the largest problem, however, is “the non-industrial, private landowner—the little man who owns three out of every four acres of commercial forest lands ip the South.” That’s about 2,000,000 landowners.
