This piece of news (the “liberation of 44 head of cattle from the Yankees) soon spread far and near and when it was over my Father only had ten cattle left. The cattle had been stolen from the farmers by the Union army as they passed along. The farmers came and identified all but ten and were allowed to have them back.

In January my Father told me and Daniel Stark to drive those ten cattle near Charlottesville to be fed and for safe keeping. Daniel and I started out on this fifty mile drive. When I arrived at the Robinson River the rain had swollen the stream above normal. My horse was about in the middle of the river when I tipped my foot and fell in, getting wet up around my waist. After reaching the other side I pulled off my pants and wrang the water out, put them back on and continued on.

Feed was very scarce and hard to get on my journey. One day on the drive it began to get late in the afternoon and every time I would ask for feea and to spend the night the people would turn me away. It began to look
