Howell added that the Carter Administration had asked that all fanners be eligible for federal crop insurance as part of Carter’s national farm bill. If the legislation is passed, Virginia’s farmers will be able to obtain this insurance starting in 1979, said Howell.
In the meantime, Howell said he had requested U.S.D.A. impact aid since “there is little relief in immediate sight for our hard pressed com growers.” He noted that the bulk of federal assistance under drought disaster relief programs for 27 affected Virginia counties will aid dairy farmers in the form of hay and transportation of additional feed from other states.
