Democratic gubernatorial candidate Henry Howell reported in a statement released over the weekend that he has written President Carter, Secretary of Agriculture Bergland and Governor Mills Godwin requesting that they consider making U.S. Department of Agriculture impact aid funds available to Virginia’s drought stricken corn growers. Howell’s statement followed a tour of Fredericksburg cornfields on Saturday, July 16.
If approved, U.S.D.A. impact aid would pump funds directly into drought areas to reimburse corn growers for their losses in seed, fertilizer, chemicals and other basic equipment.
"It has been estimated that in the 46 counties most adversely affected, 75 to 90 per cent of Virginia’s corn crop has been ruined by drought,” said Howell. “Given the unfortunate situation of a nationwide com surplus this year, and the fact that corn prices are 50 per cent of what they were two years ago, the devastation of Virginia’s corn crop will mean severe economic hardship to our state’s corn growers.”
