“Having your birth certificate when you come in to file your Social Security claim may be the best investment you could make,” Hundley said, “it enables us to process your claim faster and will therefore get your money to you sooner. The same is true of marriage certificates, death certificates, and other necessary papers.”
Huxtable also noted that Social Security is not the only agency who requires a birth certificate as the Veteran’s Administration, schools, and many others have similar requirements. “It just makes good sense,” he said, “to get your copy and then to safeguard it in a readily available place.”
