Currently, from three to five workers are at the polls in the county’s six precincts for presidential elections, according to Mrs. Cleverley, and the county pays each approximately $30. She noted that election costs are born entirely by the locality and not reimbursed with federal or state funds. Doubling the number of precinct workers to handle registration for the crowds who may (or may not) show up at the polls on election day could cost county tax payers an additional $1,000, said Mrs. Cleverley.
Keeping registration books open until election day would also increase the possibility of fraud and add to the difficulties of assigning a voter to the oprrect precinqt, Mrs; Cleverley continued.
She expressed doubt that allowing people to register on election day would increase voter turnout, the goal President Carter hopes to achieve with the legislation. Mrs. Cleverley predicted that
