“We have to find some category where we can make a switch,” answered Bloomer and suggested the possibility of ordering one smaller school bus instead of a fullsize vehicle in order to realize a savings.
Despite a few misgivings the Board members unanimously authorized Bloomer to purchase two used cars at a maximum price of $1,000 a piece.
“If we can get it for $500, we’re going to do that,” the Superintendent added.
Employment Policy
The Board also unanimously adopted an addition to school employment policy. Bloomer described the clause as a “reaction to the affirmative action thing” (a request previously made by the Seventh District Black Caucus for more black teachers in the Rappahannock school system).
Bloomer said that the impression he had garnered in attending several School Board meetings was that the Board members wanted “to go in terms of well qualified individuals”, regardless of race, sex, religion, creed or ethnic background. The new clause in employment policy reaffirms the School Board’s position of non-discrimination in hiring practices, said Bloomer.
