No Flooding Problems
In accordance with Health Department requirements, the treatment facility will be situated at least 250 feet from the nearest dwelling, Long said. He described possible problems with flooding that may arise due to the facility’s location as . "relatively minor”, noting the difference in elevation between the two banks of the Thornton River. The sewdr plant side of the river is approximately seven feet higher than the opposite side where the Coop is located, he said, making any chance of flooding “very, very remote.” Long added that the flood plain designation at the plant’s location is “based on soils rather than on past occurance of floods.”
The sewage treatment plant’s two lagoons cover approximately an acre in area and will have a water depth of ten feet. Long recommended that they be enclosed by a welded wire fence topped by two strands of barbed wire. He said that plans also call for site screening with two rows of trees to form a complete buffer. “The ground elevation of the lagoons will be approximately 12 feet above the mean water level of the river,” he concluded.
“Then a five-foot berm on top of that,” interjected BZA Chairman Josef Gardiner.
