About 20,000 Tree Farmers in the South have benefited through higher productivity added the SFI President. “If every woodland owner would look into the American Tree Farm Program or other forest-management programs offered by industry or government, America wouldn’t have to worry about a wood shortage.” McGowin pointed out that industry and government lands are typically well-managed, but together they own only a fourth of the South’s forest.
He concluded, “We have the land base to get the job done in the South—some 204,000,000 acres. We have the technical know-how. If we don’t get on the stick we’ll have nobody to blame but ourselves. Trees are a renewable resource that we don’t have to rely on anyone else to supply.”
