A Senate-House conference committee, meeting to reconcile differences in the 1978 agricultural appropriations bill, agreed to add funds to bail out the drought and flood conservation practices program run by the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service, Congressman J. Kenneth Robinson reports.
Robinson, who served as one of the conferees on the bill that could be sent to the White House this week, said the funds are "specifically for use in areas the government has declared to be emergency drought impact areas, and that includes all 21 counties of our Seventh Congressional District.
"It should enable certified farmers to get government cost-sharing help in replanting scorched or overgrazed pastureland, in digging new wells to water their livestock, and in meeting other droughtrelated farm needs.”
"Drought has been so extensive in the nation this year,” Robinson explained, "we had to add funding to keep this important program operating. It has run bonedry.”
