Escapes trom Virginia s state prisons .reached a tenyear low in fiscal 1977, according
to figur&'cbiMfctostf' by the Virginia Department of Corrections. Both the total number of escapes and the rate-per1,000 inmates were at their lowest points in a decade, despite an inmate population which has risen sharply in the past two years.
In the year ending June 30, there were 136 escapes from the state’s 11 major institutions and 30 field units for adult offenders. The number represents 19 escapes per 1,000 inmates in the system.
The population of the state-operated correctional institutions on June 30 was 7,161, not including state prisoners temporarily held in other facilities.
