“If you must exercise in the sun, take frequent breaks and work in the shade as much as possible,” says Williams. He says athletes can grow accustomed to exercising in the heat by gradually building up their tolerance over seven to 10 days. Eventually the athlete will sweat more, which will facilitate less salt loss and more heat loss.

Sometimes reaction to heat is governed by age, sex or weight. “Anyone who is obese feels heat more because fat serves as a sort of insulation that retards dissipation of heat,” he says. “Some researchers speculate that females suffer more from the heat because of their lower and slower sweat production and the greater percentage of fat in their body weight. Females cannot seem to withstand exercising in the heat as well as males tolerate it.
