In Hawaii, rats did $11 million worth of damage to the sugarcane crop last year. Biplanes now spread oats mixed with rodentkide on the fields, which is proving more successful at rat control than the introduction of the mongoose nearly a century ago.
Cane-wielding “night killers” roam the alleys of Bombay clubbing rats that feed on piles of garbage. They account for only half of the 4,000 rats killed dally, however, not enough to make a dent in the city’s per-* manent rat population. India recently began a mass rat poisoning program, but acceptance has been slow because of the Hindu reverence for life and the rat in particular.
Scientists in the United States say sanitation is the best weapon against rats.
