Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever is curable with prompt therapy. Persons suspected of having the disease should be treated without delay.
Symptoms usually appear within three to ten days. They include severe headache, fever and muscle ache. Often, though not always, a rash appears on ankles and wrists one to three days after the onset of fever. Later it may spread to other parts of the body.
Do not wait for a rash to appear before seeking medical help.
Controlling ticks in large areas is generally not feasible. But homeowners can reduce the tick population in their yards by cutting and burning brush and keeping grass mowed short. Chemicals such as malathion and diazinon can help kill ticks in limited areas.
Not all ticks carry Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. In Virginia only two species are known to infect humans. They are the American dog tick and the Lone Star tick.
