the continuous bath of radiating heat from the sun to directly heat buildings, rather than indirectly through the use of fossil fuels. Any solar system consists of three generic components: collectors, storage, and distribution.
“A collector is any material that absorbs and traps the sun’s energy, whether a panel specifically designed to absorb light or just a window with a southern exposure. Storage can take place in the construction materials such as a masonry wall which may absorb heat, all day and radiate the stored heat during the night. A medium such as water may be used to retain the heat until it is needed during the night or cloudy days. Distribution can be by convection from a heated wall or by air circulated in ducts,” he said.
There are many types of solar heating methods and systems and even more collector designs. They range from very simple methods such as solar-oriented windows that can be used with any home to special components that can be added to the house directly or next to the house.
Basically, solar heating systems fall into two categories; active and passive systems. Most systems combine these to some extent because the efficiency is increased.
