Relf also cautioned gardeners to be careful in areas where high winds are common. Plants should be placed in a protected location or provided with a wind break. Otherwise, there is danger that the leaves will be severely shredded or burned by the winds.
“Watch for weeds that may develop from seeds blown into the pot," she said.
Insect pests need to be controlled with appropriate insecticides. Be particularly cautious about chewing insects such as caterpillars and loopers as they can do a great deal of damage in a short time. Red spider, another offensive pest of many plants, can be partially controlled by frequent spraying with the garden hose, Relf said.
A shady back porch or terrace is an ideal location for ferns, gardenias, begonias and many other plants. The location gives them a chance to renew their vigor out-ofdoors and yet be close to the living area so they will continue to provide pleasure.
