Rappahannock County now has a bus service. It’s not Greyhound or Trail ways, but Ron Wilson’s shuttle service promises to provide cheap, reliable transportation to Culpeper and Front Royal for those who don’t have a car to drive for grocery shopping and doctor appointments.
After living in Rappahannock for five years, Ron recognized the need for some type of public transportation. With his six passenger van, he hopes to be able to at least partially fill that need. He began with transporting clients for the Welfare and Health Departments on a contractual basis and now plans to expand with regularly scheduled runs to Culpeper on Fridays and Front Royal on Saturdays.
According to Wilson, posters will soon go up in stores and post offices, giving the exact time of stops along his route. On the Culpeper swing, he plans to pick up passengers in Etlan, Sperryville, Woodville and Boston. The sweep to Front Royal' will have stops in Washington, Flint Hill and Huntly. He expects to run both routes, including layover time in town, in approximately three hours. Passenger pick-ups along his runs will be at post offices i£ the villages.
Wilson has a chauffeur’s license and the necessary insurance coverage, both prerequisites for the license he obtained from the State Corporation Commission to run a shuttle service. He doesn’t have a two-way radio in his van so it won’t be possible for prospective clients to reach him while he’s out on the route but he noted that he’ll check in frequently with his wife Debra. He added that she’d be at the Wilson home busy with the care of twin babies so she would be available full-time to take messages. Once he has the shuttle service in full operation, he suggested that passengers call him at home (987-8159) to reserve a seat on the van. Otherwise, it will be first come, first serve.
Ron said he will increase the number of trips he makes into Culpeper and Front Royal, adding routes on other days, if the demand grows. He added that he will also provide special charter service or pick up passengers at spots other than village post offices if he has the time. Charter service or special pick-up will have to be arranged ahead of time by phone.
“I’d love to be as busy as I can if 1 can fit it in," Ron concluded.
