poodle was one of the first hunting dogs and reference has been made to them as early as the 1500’s. One authority places their existence as early as AD 30.

The traditional line clipping was inspired by French clowns who used poodles in the circus. The clipping allowed more ease in movement in the acts. Poodles were also used in Europe to ferret out truffles. The dogs were preferred to pigs which were also used, but pigs often ate the truffle before they could be gathered.
