More than a sociological study, the book is an excursion into a way of life that exists today only in a few hollows of the Appalachians. Jack and Carolyn’s interest in the project was an outgrowth of their association with the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club as they travelled from hiking to history.

As we got to know various mountain people we realized that they were a special breed of people—people who could exist in a hostile environment with success and dignity.
