Jack took time off from work to peruse records in National Archives—and that was often as interesting as talking to oldtimers, he says. Carolyn devotes much of her summers (free since she is a schoolteacher) to writing the data and organizing it.
“And all this," claims Jack, “resulted from my accidentally stumbling across an old chimney about 15 years ago. It had some interesting writing on it. 1 thought about that chimney for ten years. Finally, I had to go back to see it again. I walked right to it, took a picture, wrote down the name. Several years passed, and as this project grew, I decided to see if I could find the man who carved his name on that chimney. First telephone call I made I had my man. It was something like a miracle."
