Mrs. Buntin remarked that she didn't understand how the bill authorizing the state to assume local administrative welfare costs got by the General Assembly without more public comment.
"Is this one of the economy moves they’re claiming?" asked Latham.
“Yes,” answered Mrs. Buntin, adding that state administration would provide fiscal relief to localities but would mean a raise in state costs. She reported earlier that there had been much talk in the last General Assembly session about local fiscal relief and that this concern had resulted in the reimbursement in June of local administrative costs accrued in the Aid to Dependent Children program. She noted that the check had gone directly to the county treasurer for deposit in the general fund instead of to the Welfare Department.
In other action, the Board approved an office subscription to the Richmond Times Dispatch so the staff will be able to keep abreast of state news that concerns social services. Also, Mrs. Buntin agreed to investigate getting a dehumidifier for the basement Food Stamp offices.
