Perhaps the most powerful current movement in American public education comes to Rappahannock County this fall: tests in basic skills.
Since 1974, 34 states have set up minimal academic standards required for graduation in the form of competency tests.
To qualify for a high school diploma in Virginia after Jan. 1, 1981, students must not only complete required courses but also must pass tests of minimum competency in mathematics Tenth graders now at Rappahannock High School will be the first graduating class affected by the 1978 General Assembly’s revision of the standards of quality for public education, a revision which includes the required tests approved by the State Board of Education in Richmond.
Seniors in the Class of 1981 must pass these math and reading tests to be eligible for graduation.
Tests for basic skills in reading, communications and mathematics will be given ninth and 10th graders and also first, seoo-id and third graders this
Those who perform poorly on the standardized tests will be given remedial work by classroom teachers.
