her dolls. When she was 16, she began making her own clothes and sewed for others.
Katherine estimates that she must have, over the years, made about five thousand garments, altered countless ones and made innumerable pairs of draperies and slipcovers. She worked with, and just recently retired from, Early’s Carpet Sales at Amissville where she was employed for 9 years. Retirement was impossible, though, for they still call on her occasionally for jobs which she does at home.
■‘1 guess the sewing which I most enjoyed are the wedding gowns and dresses though it has all been interesting. It has given me an opportunity to meet so many nice people and develop friendships,” Mrs. Riley said. “The most difficult jobs are alterations and slip covers, I believe, but one time 1 made Austrian drapes for a lady which were quite a handful). They are shirred on tape and then rings put on for manipulating.” Katherine has mended and altered huntsmen’s coats, took up tuxedos, made wedding veils to order when a commercial model wasn’t suitable and saved the day many times with her cheerful emergency service. She has been a devoted member of the Amissville Baptist Church for fifty years and arranges the church flowes four months of the year. In the 28 years she has prepared the communion.
