Acknowledging that capital outlay had been on the agenda for the November meeting, Nichols said he was still in the process of collecting information. Rural subdivisions are sprouting up all over the countryside in Piedmont Virginia. According to a rural subdivision directory covering Clarke, Frederick, Page, Shenandoah and Warren Counties published by the Lord Fairfax Planning District Commission, that district has 772 subdivisions located outside incorporated towns and the city of Winchester, as of 1977.
The 772 subdivisions cover a total of 68,643.7 acres and contain 49,758 platted building lots. The trend towards large lot development is reflected in figures on land subdivisions: between 1956-60, 13,735.1 acres were divided into 13,061 lots; between 1966-70, 16,742.3 acres were divided into 11,793 lots and between 1971-77, 22,209 acres were divided into 9,627 lots.
