species, I suspect that the insects were feeding on the evergreens as well as the hardwood trees.
I took a quick inventory of the bird life in the area: white-breasted nuthatch, pileated woodpecker, redbellied woodpecker, flicker. Wild turkeys were using the area heavily.
SKY-DIVING INSECTS
At the time of these observations (October 22, 1978), we had already seen several hard killing frosts. Even so, the waikingsticks were still actively mating, feeding, and dropping eggs and-or frass.
Within a five-acre area, hardly a square foot was devoid of walkmgstick insects. They were crawling on every tree-trunk, and hanging on every branch, as if contemplating an organized attack on me, the intruder. Indeed, they actually did drop by the dozen' from the treetops as I moved through their territory.
This behavior was definitely not carried out at random. The insects seemed to sense my movement through the woods, timing their aerial drops to land on or near me. When I remained motionless, the “rain” of insects ceased!
